The Beginner’s Guide to Beautiful Skin: My 3 Non-Negotiables
80% of your skin health happens at home
Have you ever been to the dentist and they ask if you floss, and then proceed to tell you it’s one of the most important things you can do for your health? Like, somehow your gums are connected to your heart, and suddenly you feel personally attacked?
I have felt this too, even though I know they are right.
I know you may not want to hear this, but skincare has that too, and it’s called mineral-based sunscreen. This is my first non-negotiable, period.
There’s a lot of noise right now about chemical versus mineral sunscreen, whether you need it, and when to use it, but if you actually look at the data, daily sunscreen is not optional if you care about your skin. If you’re investing in anti-aging treatments or injectables, you have to protect that investment. You don’t need to be dramatic about it at sunrise, but if you are out and about during the day, your skin needs protection. This is anti-aging at its most basic level.
My second non-negotiable is simple, but somehow still gets skipped more than you’d think… wash your face.
Truly. Think about everything that touches your skin throughout the day. Makeup, sweat, oil, environmental buildup, all of it just sitting there. Not to mention how many times we touch our faces! (Several hundred times a day, by the way.) One of the most consistent things you’ll hear from models and people in the skin care industry is that no matter how tired they are, they wash their face. If you’re going days between cleansing or doing a quick bar-of-soap rinse in the shower every couple of days, your skin will reflect that. You’re putting good products on top of buildup, and none of it can actually absorb as it should. Healthy skin starts with a clean foundation, and that also doesn’t mean a double cleansing morning and night. If you must, one double cleanse at night should do the trick.
The last non-negotiable is choosing a skincare line that is actually backed by science instead of TikTok.
It doesn’t have to be complicated, and it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You don’t need ten steps or to spend a fortune, but you do need products that actually do something. I’ll be honest, I have some product commitment issues when it comes to skincare. I like to switch things up every now and then, just like you do with shampoo when your hair needs a reset. But the reason I personally chose what I use is that it covers the basics really well and it’s safe. A good cleanser, an antioxidant, and a moisturizer that supports skin health and helps maintain the results of what we’re doing in the treatment room. Remember the caption, 80% happens at home. Simple, consistent, and actually effective routines.
At the end of the day, if you do nothing else, do these three things. Your future skin will thank you, and honestly… so will everything else you’re investing in.
Warmly,
Brittany
